The Siddha system of medicine, one of India’s most ancient healing traditions, delves deep into the integration of body, mind, and consciousness. Beyond the five elements, sense organs, and motor organs, Siddha philosophy identifies four inner instruments—Manam (Mind), Buddhi (Intellect), Siddham (Determination/Achievement), and Ahankaram (Ego)—collectively known as “Anthakaranangal.” These instruments are not merely psychological faculties but are central to perception, decision-making, and spiritual evolution. In parallel, Siddha doctrines speak of the "96 Tattvas"—a collection of physical, physiological, and psychological components that constitute human existence. These Tattvas are interpreted through multiple schools of thought, but they unanimously emphasize the foundational unity of the human system.

🧠 The Four Inner Instruments: Foundations of Thought and Action

In Siddha philosophy, the inner instruments or Anthakaranangal form the control center of perception, cognition, and behavior:

  1. Manam (Mind) – Responsible for receiving impressions and initiating thought. It is where the process of thinking begins.

  2. Buddhi (Intellect) – The seat of analysis and reasoning, allowing the mind to discriminate and make decisions.

  3. Siddham (Determination/Achievement) – Executes the decisions and achieves goals based on inputs from Buddhi and Manam.

  4. Ahankaram (Ego/Self-identity) – The center of self-awareness and identity, directing individual experience and action.

The harmony of these instruments ensures balanced perception, behavior, and decision-making. When disturbed, it leads to internal conflict, delusion, or ego-centered actions. Thus, the Siddha tradition emphasizes purifying and aligning these inner faculties through spiritual practices, medicine, and conscious living to attain true wisdom and inner peace.
